‘Market / Place’, joint Art Residency at Sunshine Art Centre

Olive Gilbert and I were selected to be artists in residence within Sunshine Art Centre, via Brimbank Council for six weeks over Summer in early Summer 2023.
We worked out of the main space at Sunshine Art Space, on a hectic shop corner that was a thoroughfare between the train station and Sunshine Crescent.
Olive and I spent almost everyday working out of this space over Summer, I painted and drew scenes from the markets in Sunshine, both from memory and reference images I took. Olive created an abundance of woven bags using found fabric, ropes and cord from local opshops and maintenance stores. The residency culminated in an exhibition that of our findings; we covered the inner walls of the space completely with Olive’s bags and my paintings.
I asked New Zealand based author Max Olijnyk to write a piece about Sunshine to accompany a self-published booklet that Olive and I created for the exhibition opening night [read below]
Overall, it was an immersive and highly interactive residency.
