This body of work is a continuation of my commitment to using colour and line to convey a story visually, a natural follow-on from formal studies in illustration.
‘Robbie leaning forward to get a sponge out of the bucket, he’s washing the car in his parents backyard‘ was selected as a finalist in the Hazlehurst Art on Paper Prize for 2025 and ‘Clem reaching into the oven to take out the granola‘ was selected by Art & Collectors to show within a group exhibition titled ‘A Seat at the Table’ in April 2026.
For this exhibition I created five works to distill key scenes from the Summer that had just passed. The exhibition’s title references the relationship between sunlight and wellbeing, evoking the powdercoated, lingering sweetness of pastel-coloured lollies — something to be savoured slowly, like summer itself.
I used a dual approach to create this body of work -
- One revolved around carefully layered pencil marks to build tone
- Another was broader and more gestural, scratchy strokes with pencil, to create movement and drama.
This combination forms a distinct visual language, it is one that captures candid moments lightly and honestly: pulling granola from the oven, reaching for a wet sponge, or reading on sun-warmed rocks after a swim.
The works that comprise Pastille are vibrant and expressive, filling Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf with a sense of rhythm and movement, like a storyboard from a summer novel.
