Market Fan Club is a suite of radiant paintings informed by the shifting intensity of light and shadow across seasonal produce at Queen Victoria Markets, shown at Jacky Winter Gallery in Collingwood, 2018.

I lived opposite the markets for just over seven years and felt compelled to visit it practically every day it was open, even if it was to just sit outside of the deli section to have a coffee or to do a quick lap around the stalls on a painting break. I would take photos of the fruits, zooming in incredibly close to capture the colours and light, then going home to look over the reference images and paint the scenes from memory.

I created eight paintings for this exhibition, using gouache and acrylic paint on thick Arches watercolour paper; it was a time-sensitive task. I meticulously built up tone and depth with watered down layers of gouache. The results of which are bold and delicate at the same time. This visual duality suits the unexpected nature of the markets; the textural detail alongside the gestural sweeps of layered paint to convey shadow and depth.

Market Fan Club is a manifesto of sorts for Queen Victoria Market; to the shapes, colours, sounds and smells of it all.
